A new publication discussing the global future of photovoltaic (PV) production and deployment was released in the academic journal Science earlier this month. “Photovoltaics at multiterawatt scale: Waiting is not an option” underlines the urgency of action to maintain growth on a global scale. The authors outline the way and contribution of PV towards cutting greenhouse gas emissions while meeting global energy needs by 2050.The suggestions of the group of experts include the importance of identifying clear targets and realistic projections for the future, the role of sector coupling and different storage possibilities, cost optimisation and cell efficiencies, increasing material recycling and circularity as well as a better global distribution of the manufacturing lines. These measures shall contribute to reach 75 TW of installed PV power by 2050.
